Egon Schiele, born in Tulln, Austria, in 1890, studied art in Vienna, finding the academy's teachings restrictive. Gustav Klimt's encouragement and exposure to works by Munch and others influenced Schiele's unique expressionist style. He exhibited at the 1909 Vienna Kunstschau and formed the Neukunstgruppe. Art critic Arthur Roessler became a friend and supporter, and collector Heinrich Benesch became a lifelong friend. By 1910, Schiele's distinctive portrait and landscape style gained recognition, leading to commissions from Vienna's elite.
