We recommend using two 4" x 4" legs (true measurement: 3-1/2" x 3-1/2") and one 4" x 6" top beam (true measurement: 3-1/2" x 5-1/2"). The bracket openings measure 3.62 inches x 5.62 inches, respectively. We strongly advise measuring your lumber before purchase to ensure it meets these specifications. Warning! Do not force the wood into the bracket; the lumber should slide in easily with a snug fit. If your boards are too large, we recommend planing them down for a comfortable fit.
